2 Weekends, 2 Cities and 2 Thousand Meters of Anguish-laced Glory

Two thousand meters is the standard distance for an indoor rowing (“Erg”) competition and there's no faking it for those who rise to the challenge. Rowers cannot sneak, cheat, buy or otherwise finagle their way to a more desirable outcome on this monster of a physical and mental test, because the machine's monitor tells the story and the numbers do not lie. There are very hard edges to the results which provide a snapshot of an individual's ability, determination and preparation. Interestingly, it's the brutality of the test that results in commensurate bragging rights...almost as if the self-punishment is a badge of honor, or a war story to tell in a pain contest where the one who endures the most anguish is rewarded the greatest glory.

The past two weekends, St. Andrew Rowing Club participated in these “pain contests” in two different cities. First, on Saturday, February 6th a majority of the team's roster traveled to downtown Atlanta and defended home-town bragging rights at the 2010 Atlanta Erg Sprints (write-up by school newspaper) hosted by Georgia Tech Crew.

Racing against AJRA, Augusta Juniors and Westminster, St. Andrew Rowing Club had a fantastic day posting 11 of the top 20 times in the Junior Women and Junior Men's events, and 7 of the top 20 times in the Novice categories. Highlights included several rowers posting a personal record (“PR”) and two rowers beating the event records within their categories to win the coveted “Hammer Award”: Patrick Smith, Junior Coxswain Men 3:47.0 (1000m) and Stephen Podwojski, who won the Junior Men category with a time of 6:25.5.

Full results can be found here at the event site

The following weekend several of SARC's top varsity athletes also traveled to the C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints, World Indoor Rowing Championships in Boston, MA where the best of the best come from around the globe to test themselves at the highest level. On Sunday...Valentine's Day, the seven “gluttons for punishment” from St. Andrew raced well once again and represented the Southeast and SARC in strong fashion with several posting a new “PR”. Standouts of the day included Stephen Podwojski who rowed the 2,000m in 6:24.6 to finish in the top 10 of all 185 Junior Men and Hayley Tanasijevich finishing in 8:02.4 to place in the top 20 of all 80 Junior Lightweight Women.

Full results can be found here at the event site

We're proud of all our competitors regardless of their numbers because the beauty of the 2K test lies in the fact that anyone can do it and race not just other peers and contemporaries but also against oneself. The test is not simply to pull a number lower than the next person, but to pull your lowest number and to post your own “PR”. Just remember if you are up for the challenge, the monitor always tells the story, and the numbers do not lie!

Welcome to the Spring 2010 Season of St. Andrew Rowing Club

We have tried to compile a list of all parent and rower email addresses that wish to receive emails throughout the season - however, if someone in your family does not receive this email and you would like to add them to the list, please reply to communications[at]standrewrowing.com.

Web Site

Coach Dan and our webmaster, Mike Cleveland, have worked very hard to get our new web site (www.standrewrowing.com) up and running, putting in many hours of hard work and dedication to convert the old site to its new look and feel. Hats off to both of them! Coach Dan will be posting updates regularly on the front of the home page - which also has links to Twitter and Facebook - so please take the time to check it out regularly and take advantage of this valuable means of communication. Also, to new parents, Coach Dan updates the crew phone line with weather, practice and travel announcements - that number is (404) 339-0009. Practice cancellations will be posted no later than 3:30 p.m.

ERG Sprints

Our team officially kicks off the spring racing season this coming Saturday (Feb 6) by venturing to downtown Atlanta and the campus of Georgia Tech for the 2010 Atlanta Erg Sprints – a long-standing winter tradition and indoor rowing competition involving the “erg” (ergometer). There, some of the top collegiate and high school rowing clubs in the region will convene in team and individual battles for bragging rights over the 2,000m distance...a test that rowers love to hate.

We invite you to join us in cheering on the athletes this weekend, and even some of our coaches, who will be racing against the clock in several heats, vying for the fastest time in their category. Below is our schedule for the day by squads followed by directions. A full event schedule can be found at the Erg Sprint website as well. Looking forward to seeing some of you there!

CHANGES FOR SPRING 2010

Monday, January 25th will be the first day of Spring Season for our Varsity and Novice Crews.  We welcome everyone back into the swing of our full routine and racing season, and want you to be aware of a few updates to our schedule:

  1. Novice Men have shifted their "OFF" day to Tuesday to align with coaches' availability. We apologize for the confusion and have reposted the weekly practice schedule in the Program Descriptions .
  2. Remember important dates, deadlines and practice/racing schedules are now also updated in our team Google Calendar . You can subscribe to the team calendar if you'd like and have changes automatically sync to your own calendar, or simply refer back the team's calendar page to view changes.
  3. Finally, to clarify the start date for Introductory Scullers, this group will begin Spring Season on Tuesday, February 2nd. We posted two different dates and need to confirm that what you see on our calendar page and programs page are correct.

Thank you everyone for making Spring Registration a great one this year. 2010 racing looks to be full of great potential if we can just tame the river!

Go SA!

Out with the old; in with the new

2009
The end of the calendar year is always cause for reflection on what has been. While the fall 2009 rowing season was greeted with great anticipation by all in August, it ended with a great sigh of relief for most in November. Little did our coaching staff know when they were planning their respective squad’s training regimens during the summer months that Mother Nature would interrupt their best laid plans. Instead of leading our athletes on the water, they were forced, instead, to lead them into the water on both land and parking lot. The unusual fall season was not what any of us signed up for at registration.

In my years in and around our great sport, I have both witnessed and experienced some of the life lessons that rowing can teach us -- the rewards of hard work, the consequences of laziness, the thrill of victory, the disappointment of losing, working together as a team, and the need to go the extra mile when no one is watching. Usually, we expect these lessons to come to fruition at the end of a 2000 meter or 3-mile race but, as I witnessed this past season, a team and a club can come together and grow off the water, as well.

With Mother Nature providing us with a different kind of race course this past season, I have observed that adversity can bring out the best in people. Our three floods created havoc and the need to roll up our sleeves and pant legs. Stuff happened and you responded. On behalf of the Board of Directors, please accept our thanks for your speedy and generous responses of time, labor and capital in our multiple recovery efforts.

2010
The new year invites us to return to the norm. With the seeds of team building planted by spending more time on our boathouse recovery than post-leg drive recovery, it is now time to let coaches coach and our rowers row as the law of averages tells us that the spring season should provide us with more on-the-water time.

Our boathouse and equipment recovery efforts will continue into spring season but our goal is to accomplish our tasks without interrupting the team’s water time. As a result, we will, once again, be asking our parents to respond to our ongoing recovery needs when it does not interrupt your time on the shoreline at a regatta. I look forward to a great season of racing and meeting more of our SARC family at the boathouse and at the races.

Winter Season and Winter Challenge

Dear Rowers an Parents,

With Fall season behind us, you may know the hardest work done in preparation for sprint racing occurs in the winter months. So for coaches and parents, that will likely mean a work day or two to wrap up some of our post-flooding projects. A clean, reorganized boathouse and facility will help our training and confidence for months to come.

For rowers, the most important period of the year is Dec 1st - Mar 1st, because hard work done during this time will give you the endurance and the confidence to race at your best during sprint regattas starting in March.

With that in mind, St. Andrew Rowing offers two winter training options:

(1) Our "Winter Season" is training designed to provide structure and supervision during an off-season with coached workouts as a team. It's not mandatory, but strongly encouraged especially for varsity rowers. Details are below and on our website.

(2) For those unable to join the team to workout, we would like to continue our tradition of a "Winter Points Challenge" during the holiday season November 26th through January 3rd. This is a particularly difficult time to adhere to the rigors of training but most rewarding when accomplished.
Points are earned per the Point System provided (email your coach if you do not have) and you must email your point totals each week to Coach Kat (for women) and Coach Black (for men), for credit.
Note: Logging workouts may seem a simple task, but it is hard to remember what was done after several days go by; so try to keep an accurate accounting daily. It will be rewarding to look back over you accomplishments at the end of the challenge period.
Those who do not participate in Winter Season or the Winter Points Challenge should aim to cross-train or stay active in another sport so you do not lose all the hard work from fall training and racing.

SARC Winter Season 2009-2010
WHEN: Nov 30 – Jan 22 (Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri 4:30-6:30p); Holiday off days TBA
WHERE: Rowing and land training practices will be held at SARC
WHAT: Roughly 50% Strength training & 50% small boat rowing / sculling
WHO: Open to returning novice and varsity athletes; encouraged for those aiming for seats in top boats during spring racing. *Jan 4* - open to returning intro scullers on Wed (4:30-6:30pm) & Sat (12-2p)
HOW: $200 paid by check to St. Andrew RC (bring to practice on Nov 30th); $50 for scullers
WHY: Build on strength & conditioning base from Fall, learn sculling and small boat skills, provide an advantage for Spring rather than starting over

Bundle up and Get Tough!

The men’s lightweight crew also faced fierce opposition, where they succeeded in placing 11th in the nation. The men’s pair, which was a new addition to the championship competition, won the C-Final and placed a respectable 13th in the nation.

The Women’s team members, moving from stern to bow, are the coxswain Adam Holt, then Maddy Razzolini, Adrian Edmonds, Virginia Gilchrist, Hayley Tanasijevich, Helen Seely, Veronica Jones, Laura Kish and Jennifer Kish. The alternate member is Brianna Reddeman.
