Secret City Results!

This weekend proved to be very successful for the SARC Varsity Women! In the Varsity 8+, the 1V (Stephen Ferrier, Sammi Zabroske, Jennifer Kish, Jessica Hatch, Julia Neppl, Jennifer Parker, Emily Warman, Nicole Assini, Liz Kantak) won the event finishing over 45 seconds ahead of 2nd place. The 2V (Erin Hayes, Emily Bopp, Brittany Shaar, Meghan Nolan, Rebecca Kish, Alex Britton, Stacey Cohen, Tiffany Moo-Young, Joy Thomas) also had a respectable showing as they finished 4th overall, beating several top boats in the event.

In the Varsity 4+, SA once again came out on top. The 1V (Erin Hayes, Sammi Zabroske, Julia Neppl, Jessica Hatch, Jennifer Kish) ended the day with another gold. Finishing behind them in 2nd place was the 2V (Stephen Ferrier, Jennifer Parker, Emily Warman, Meghan Nolan, Liz Kantak). The 3V (Josh Cohen, Tiffany Moo-Young, Emily Oxford, Laura Gilbert, Maya Underwood) also had a solid piece and improved from their last race.

St. Andrew Rowing Club attends 47th Annual Head of the Charles Regatta

Saint Andrew Rowing Club (SARC) of Roswell once again competed in the Head of the Charles Regatta held in Boston, MA on October 22-23. This invitational only 5K Head Race event is the largest two-day regatta in the world and draws more than 8,000 athletes from around the world. The Varsity Women competed in the Women's Youth Eights and had their best race to date! Starting 27th in a field of 74, the boat (Sammi Zabroske, Jennifer Kish, Jessica Hatch, Emily Warman, Jennifer Parker, Julia Neppl, Nicole Assini, and Liz Kantak) raced a courageous race, while coxswain Stephen Ferrier did a phenomenal job navigating the tight turns, and pushing the girls further as they wound their way through boats ahead of them. While hoping for a top 20 finish, the boat was quite thrilled to see that they had ended up 13th overall, which ties as the highest SARC finish in an Eight at the Head of the Charles (2002) as well as re-qualifying the boat for competition in next year's event.

An action shot from HOCR that landed in the Boston Globe! Our VW8 is on the left with #27 on the cox's back.

Competitors in the Youth Women's Eights were closely bunched as they headed for the finish line. Jim Davis/Globe Staff

The Varsity Men competed in two events: the Men's Youth Eights and the Men's Youth Four. All four young men (Michael D'Errico, David Rink, Pavle Zivojinovic, Robbie Sterling) raced the first half of the race with amazing poise and speed. Macy Osman, coxswain of the boat, led her athletes through a near perfect course resulting in her boat getting 55th out of 77 boats, after crossing the start at 56th place. Later in the day, the Men's Youth Eight launched with freshman coxswain Morgan Childress at the helm. Morgan, following the example set by the Four, also raced a near perfect course with an exciting turn where she used her arm as an extra rudder helping her turn one of sharpest turns on the race course. Her rowers (Mason Childress, Max Kinser, Austin Bragg, Michael Schmitt, Ryan Devine, James Holland, Mitchell Williams and Sean O'Brien) came though the starting line like a pro team as the 22nd boat in the race and raced like champions not allowing a single boat to pass. At the end of the day, the Men's Eight achieved a 36th place out of 75, re-qualifying them for this prestigious event next year.

Men's 8 during the race

All 14 athletes, ranging from freshman to seniors and from North Atlanta area schools, performed like true champions.

Head of the Charles Coaches Results!

Coach Rhodes posted a blazing time of 19:41, just 4 seconds off of first place, for a bronze medal in the Men's Club 1x! Richard's only regret was a late sprint, which could have meant first place for him. He has secured an entry for next year and is still glowing after his third place finish.

Coach Peter started 41st and finished 41st with a time of 21:37. Coach Peter hopes to do better next year with a lighter schedule and healthier training period prior to the race.

Coach Black finished with a time of 19:59 in the lightweight 1x, placing 22nd out of 30, which does not reflect Black's true speed.. The story of this race is two words, "Traffic Jam!" Frustrated, but optimistic, Black counts this race as a success insomuch as learning experience of how to contend amidst a cloud of traffic. The lightweight 1x is like a champ event, since it is open to all lightweights. For comparison, his time would have placed him fifth in the club 1x.

Coach Ford raced with Clemson's alumni 8 started 24th and finished 8th out of 30 with a time of 18:44. Not bad for a group who never rowed in the same boat before race day!

Coach Tom raced the Champ 2x with Matt Lenert from Atlanta Rowing Club. Tom and Matt finished 10 out of 22 with a time of 17:39.

A special mention goes out to non-coach, but team friend and GT Alum, David Judah. Judah captured first place in the Men's Club 1x with a time of 19:37! Judah's finish secures him an entry for next year's race and moves him up a division to the Men's Champ 1x.

SARC Novice Women Recap for the Chattanooga Head Race

The Novice Women had an excellent first outing this season, both proving them as the team to beat this fall but also leaving room for improvement in the coming weeks. The highlight of the day would definitely be our A boat's 36-second win in the women's youth novice 8+. They looked exceptional coming down the course, garnering compliments from many coaches and rowers from competing programs. It's worth noting that, in addition to winning the youth novice event, they would have placed second in the collegiate novice 8+ event, with a time faster than every crew in that race save Alabama, which is a Division I varsity team with recruits.

Our A four also placed second in the women's youth novice 4+ after a jittery first race. Our B boat came down the course with a relatively serious equipment issue, leading to a disappointing finish, but did a great job of rowing through challenging circumstances. Overall, gold in the 8+ and silver in the 4+ is a wonderful way to start the season, and we are looking forward to continued success (and, hopefully, double golds!).

Wednesday, 5/18 : Bring A Friend To Row!

This is always a fun time to introduce a friend to crew who doesn't quite understand what it is all about...and perhaps even getting them to become a part of the madness! As it says on the front of a t-shirt: "It's the only sport that you can win sitting on your butt going backwards." Don't forget that we have our summer Learn To Row sessions for those kids who are interested-check out our website. Rowers are welcome to come out and volunteer your time and expertise!

Friday, 5/20: Spring Picnic @ 7 PM in the Saint Andrew Family Center

We will be BBQ'ing it! The attire for families is whatever. Crew Women typically dress up and look very nice. Crew Men may pull a clean t-shirt out of their drawer if they think about it.

There is no charge to attend this highly touted event of the season... however it is asked that you bring a food contribution per the following:

  • NW-bring a vegetable or casserole side dish for 12 people
  • VW-bring a salad, coleslaw, fruit or pasta salad for 12 people
  • NM-bring 2 gallons of tea or lemonade
  • VM-bring desserts
  • Scullers-bring desserts

This is always a bittersweet time-celebrating the successes of the past year and reflecting on our challenges while recognizing and giving well wishes to our graduating seniors...sniff...of course there will also be the "senior superlative" awards as well as "most likely to..." awards which are always fun!! The evening is definitely a don't miss affair!

Many, Many Thanks to all that made the John Hunter Regatta a success. We registered 52 teams, 369 entries and more than 2000 "seats" were expected to row. Had it been a “sunny and warm” day, we would have set the record. The 2011 JHR results can be found here

Enjoy your spring break! Practice resumes on April 11

Attention all Scullers!

As mentioned in the weekly notes, next Monday is picture day. So that you aren’t traveling just for pictures, plan on having practice after getting your vogue on for the pictures and Wednesday will be your day off.If you have a grey SARC t-shirt, please wear it. If not, we’ll do the best we can to provide one for you. Other than that, bring your smiling face!

This coming Saturday is THE John Hunter Regatta! For those parents whose schedule has opened up and can now volunteer-there are still volunteer positions available. Please contact Nancy Ferrier (ngferrier@gmail.com). It is truly a fun time being a part of the action!!!

  • The regatta schedule will be sent out in the next couple of days-so stay tuned. Here is the overall regatta schedule
  • Layer your clothing-chilly in the a.m., expect warmth as the day progresses.

Weekly Notes-WE 03/12/11

For being a scrimmage 5 hours away, we had quite the showing of support from parents in Tallahassee-thanks for making the trip! The rain held off and the kids were able to get in their first competitive row of the season, and for the new Novices-learn many lessons about sportsmanship, competition and the organized chaos of rigging, de-rigging, strapping boats, loading gear onto buses, etc. as well as the monotony of watching the plethora of testosterone-filled movies on the buses. Girls-bring your DVD’s!

Special Note to ALL rowers and coaches: the staff at the hotel were very complimentary of our team and their conduct. Those lessons learned in kindergarten are worthwhile

The next event for the entire team will be the John Hunter Regatta on Lake Lanier on March 25. There are still many opportunities to participate/contribute/volunteer, so stay tuned for an email blast just for the Hunter.

VARSITY ONLY: Please confirm with your coach your attendance at the Cincinnati Dual up at Lake Lanier on March 19th.

February 28, 2011

Weekly Notes-WE 03/5/11

Note for Newbies: this is a scrimmage between 4 teams so it is not as big nor is it run as a normal regatta. No real picture opportunities, nor medal ceremonies…just pure, raw competition. This event will help our squads work out some of their kinks in preparation for our first regatta (The John Hunter Regatta at Lake Lanier!) as well as scope out some of the competition. The Varsity squads will have another dual on March 19 to prepare.

Please see the note sent to your email for information on this weekend’s scrimmage in Tallahassee.

A Great big thank-you to all who were able to come to the Spring Clean-up and the New Parent Orientation! It was great weather, a lot of work was accomplished and fun was had with parents erging and lifting boats. Sore muscles anyone?

St. Andrew Announcements week of Feb 14 - Feb 20

Mark your calendars!! The Annual SARC Chili Dinner is set for Thursday, February 17th at the Family Center immediately after practice. Please bring a dessert. Don’t forget-$5/head or $20/family….cheap eats, great entertainment, fun with your friends…it doesn’t get much better than this!

John Hunter Regatta shout out: Are there any parents out there who have a motor boat who are willing to use it at the Regatta to drive VIPs and stake holders around the course?

  • Upside: The BEST view of the races, mingling with the VIPs.
  • Downside: Hmmm, can’t think of one…

Please email Alice Bragg: jaabragg@yahoo.com for more details. If you have a boat, but are unable to pilot it, we do have plenty of reliable, sea-worthy parents who are proficient in boat driving.

A big thanks goes to those who turned out Saturday to work on the docks and clean up the area. Yet again this Saturday, Bob Parker sacrificed his body and his ratchet wrench to get the job done, with Phil Williams mediating with the manufacturer about the hinges.

SARC welcomes the Oakland Catholic Varsity Women's 8 to Atlanta on Thursday, when they come for spring training for a week.

All practices will close at SA on Monday, even though you may begin at ARC. Please plan to be picked up from St. Andrew or to carpool back to ARC to pick up your vehicle.

All practices from Monday onward will be held at the St. Andrew Boathouse!!!

February 20, 2011

Weekly Notes-WE 02/26/11

All Parents: While the recent clean-up was primarily for dock installation, this Saturday’s clean-up is a spring clean-up. There’ll be a list of to-do’s in which everyone can participate! Grab your coffee and head for the boat house ~ 9:30 AM. There is a limited time in which we can enjoy Mrs. Summers’ sticky buns as she is the parent of a graduating rower (She is also responsible for the Mud dessert….)

New Parents: For any parent who hasn’t had a chance to attend (regardless of when your child began rowing), this is truly an event where you’ll be able to appreciate some of the rigors of rowing. You are split off with a varsity team member who gives you the entire nickel tour as well as allows you to test run the ergs. You may also wish to ride in the launch on the river to see what your child sees when rowing! It is capped off with a typical regatta meal prepared by our very own Chef Robert Ward typically consisting of grilled chicken, pasta salad, Caesar salad…no one ever goes hungry…

    ANNOUNCEMENTS:
  • Please inform your coach immediately if you will not be attending the Tallahassee dual March 4th-5th
  • « Athletes should arrive to the boathouse by 4:30. We will leave promptly at 5:00
  • « We will return Saturday evening. Bring money for dinner on the road both ways.
  • Spring cleaning for any available parent Saturday at 9:30
  • New Parent orientation, Saturday at 11:00

Head of The Charles 2010

The varsity women's 8+ (Nick Snow, Veronica Jones, Hayley Tanasijevich, Taylor Hughes, Eleni Zafiroulis, Haley Brown, Annie Thompson, Julia Sykes, Jennifer Kish) placed 27th out of 70 boats with a time of 17:55.104, with AJRA coming in 28th just 3 seconds back. The 8 guaranteed an entry for next year!

The varsity women's 2x (Lauren Caldwell, Liz Kantak) had a tougher race and definitely missed the benefit of a coxswain. The Charles is a notoriously hard course to steer when that is your only job, so when you have to steer and row, it is quite the challenge. Despite several close encounters with other 2xs, the SA 2x finished the race right side up and with a better appreciation for the Charles River!

St. Andrew's participation in the men's youth doubles at the 2010 Head of the Charles Regatta was a first for the team's new varsity sculling program. Three strokes into the start of their race the button on on of the crew's sculls broke loose rendering them unable to continue. Michael Schmit (stroke) and Austin Bragg (bow) kept their composure as they were escorted to the nearby BU boathouse, where the folks there kicked into pit crew mode, and very generously replaced the broken part for them sending them on their way with good wishes for a great race. They rowed the course virtually alone, steering a perfect course while making the most of a tough situation and finishing 31st in the field.

The men’s Youth 8+ represented by Casey Ward (stroke), Todd Summers, Mitchell Williams, Stephen Podwojski, Sean Debuys, Ryan Devine, Max Kinser, and Mason Childress (bow), finished 24th out of 76 boats with a time of 15 minutes and 52 seconds. The men’s eight finished 26 seconds faster than the Atlanta Juniors boat; a demonstration of our incredible fitness and developing technique. This is an incredible achievement, qualifying a spot for a men’s youth 8+ for the Head of the Charles 2011.

25th John Hunter Regatta

At the Spaghetti Dinner you heard that planning for the 25th John Hunter Regatta, to be held in late March 2011 at Lake Lanier, is already underway. The JHR is our home regatta and our #1 fundraiser of the year. For those of you who have been with us for a number of seasons, you may have noticed that we do not "fatigue" our parents with a lot of fundraising events and requests throughout the year (as may be the case with other organizations with which you come into contact). Our parent body reacted superbly to our flood disasters last year, but we are still recovering financially from the damage done during that period. Major investments in the Boathouse, Dock and with the Fleet are all underway but the money we all pay in our season dues does not cover these costs. That's where the John Hunter comes in. If we meet our sponsorship goals for the Hunter, we can fund these investments which:

  • contributes to the long term future of the club,
  • keep our annual dues to a reasonable level and
  • means we only need to bug you once a year!!

What do we need from you? At this stage, we would ask you to consider the following:

  1. Tell us if you have a relationship with any Corporate or Local businesses that could be a potential regatta sponsor. It could be your employer, a business partner, a supplier to your business or even a customer!
  2. Tell us if you are a business owner and would like to explore not only how we could promote your business through the Hunter but also through the club's web presence, year book, etc. The SA community may be a potential customer!
  3. Making an individual pledge through our "Pulling for the Team" sponsorship level. Any individual or family can donate at the $100-$250 level to show their support for the event and their rower(s).

We will be accepting all sponsorship donations in December or early in the new year to provide options in terms of deducting them on this year's or next year's tax return.

What is in it for the Sponsors? For a corporate sponsor, being visible and active in a large local event like the Hunter is good PR. In an era when Corporate America is often painted as disconnected from "Main Street USA", being associated with one of the biggest youth rowing events in the South East could be attractive. Rowing is a prestige sport, associated with good values, the Hunter is held at an Olympic venue that attracted over 45 teams, 1500 athletes and over 3000 people to the event in 2010. It will be even bigger in 2011! For a local business sponsor, the event can raise their profile, be cost-effective local advertising (we get TV, Radio and Press coverage) and can just be a way to give back to the local community.

SARC cannot function without the many hours volunteered by our parents. This spring season many more hours will be required as we are hosting the 25th John Hunter Regatta at Lake Lanier, providing volunteers for the Southeast Regional Regatta at Lake Lanier as well as hosting several duels at Lake Lanier. If you have any questions about exactly what is required of a certain position, please feel free to speak with our Volunteer Coordinator, Nancy Ferrier ( ngferrier@gmail.com ). There is something for everyone and it’s always fun to meet other parents and get involved in your child’s sport!

The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th 4+s finished 24th, 38th, and 55th out of 80 entries, while the 1st 4+ of Nick Snow, Veronica Jones, Hayley Tanasijevich, Taylor Hughes, Jennifer Kish rounded out the top 10 in a very fast field!

The next day the Varsity Women tackled the small boats and had a respectable showing. Veronica Jones, Hayley Tanasijevich, and Jennifer Kish raced in the Youth 1x and finished 3rd, 17th and 29th out of 39 entries. In the Youth 4x, Julia Sykes, Eleni Zafiroulis, Lauren Caldwell and Annie Thompson finished 11th while Haley Brown, Sammi Zabroske, Liz Kantak and Carissa Cleveland came in 24th in a field of 34.

After windy conditions and a rough start in the MV4+'s Coxswain Jessie Kerins, and rowers Sean O'Brien, Mason Childress, Max Kinser and Adam Sizemore finishing 26th, Josh Cohen, David Rink, Kenny Peterson, Connor Gruver and Pavle Zivojinvoic finished 34th and Mike Weinberger, Robbie Sterling, Brendan Seery, P arker Gaigelas and Michael D'Errico finished 48th out of 72 boats.

Later in the day, the VM rallied together to make their mark in the eights where our 1V8+ Coxswain: Jessie Kerins, Casey Ward, Todd Summers, Mitchell Williams, Stephen Podwojski, Sean Debuys, Ryan Devine, Max Kinser and Mason Childress placed 14th with a time of 15:51, just missing Capital City by 3 seconds, and beating AJRA by 21 seconds a solid finish showing incredible progress this season.

Our 2V8+ Tristan Snow, Robbie Sterling, Kenny Peterson, Sean O'Brien, Pavle Zivojinovic, Parker Gaigelas, Connor Gruver, Mike Thomas and Michael D'Errico, finished 22, with a time of 16:14 nearly beating AJRA's 1st eight, trailing by 2 seconds, well done 2V!

Later in the evening, Casey Ward and Todd Summers, hit the course with a storm, passing 10 boats to win the Youth 2X with a time of 17:34.7, 28 seconds faster than Sarasota Scullers their nearest competitor. This was a boat they had practiced in the mornings with Coach Black throughout the fall, attesting to the talent and dedication of our 1V8 stern pair.

On Sunday we had three youth singles from the VM test their sculling talents, Todd Summers walking through 10 boats to a bronze medal finish in a time of 18:39.9, Stephen Podwojski placing 27th and Mitchell Williams placing 30th out of 56 boats. Despite all rowers having rowed at least 2 other races, our Mixed youth 8+ took gold with a time of 15:55.

2010 USRowing Youth National Championship

AMELIA, OH - Congratulations to St. Andrew Rowing Club's Lightweight Men's 4+, bronze medalists at the 2010 USRowing Youth National Championship! The SARC oarsmen put up quite a fight in Sunday's Grand Final (top 6 teams from a field of 18), posted their fastest time of the season and defeated 15 of the nation's fastest crews in the event (including Southeastern rivals from The McCallie School of Chattanooga, TN and Capital City Rowing of Tallahassee, FL). It was a hard-fought, battle of a boat race with a mere 1.6 seconds separating 2nd place from 4th. The team's mantra for the season and name of the boat raced by this crew, "FIGHT'S ON", proved to be true indeed for these athletes from SARC who invested a tremendous amount of time and effort over the past year in preparation for this prestigious event.

St. Andrew Rowing:
Continues Traditions of Excellence on National Stage

St. Andrew Rowing Club's Lightweight Men's 4+, bronze medalists at the 2010 USRowing Youth National Championship!

These five athletes from the St. Andrew Rowing Club represented the team well over the three-day long event (US Rowing Youth Nationals), held on Harsha Lake just outside of Cincinnati, Ohio. Pictured above from left to right, the crew included Jessie Kerins, coxswain, a rising senior at Walton High School; Marc Powell, bowman, recent graduate of North Springs High School; Todd Summers, two-seat, a rising senior from Pope High School; Casey Ward, three-seat, a rising senior from Milton High School; and Caleb Justis, stroke-seat, a recent graduate of Milton High School, with Head Coach Dan McNair on the left and Men's Coach James Black on the right.

They earned the right to compete for a National medal after coming from behind to win a GOLD medal in the US Rowing Southeastern Regionals in Sarasota, Florida on May 9, 2010. The Southeast Youth Championship Regatta was open to crews of the 7 states that make up the Southeast Region; Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The club aims to defend its title and continue its success next year when Southeastern Regionals moves to the 1996 Olympic Rowing Venue at Lake Lanier!

Winning gold at the regional championship, and bronze at the national level was a fantastic accomplishment and a wonderful end to a tough year -- affectionately called "the year of the Floods" (THREE!). The team bounced back from great losses of boats and equipment due to multiple and severe instances of flooding around the Chattahoochee River. On several occasions, these young athletes and their parents put on their mukluks and helped shovel inches of mud (and the remnants of those lovely sewage leaks) out of their boat house to keep the season going.

Looking forward to another great year during the 2010-2011 school year, St. Andrew Rowing Club is looking for hard-working, athletic young men and women who would like to learn more about crew. The club offers introductory level, week-long Learn To Row instructional sessions from June 14 through July 16 at its boathouse in Roswell. Ages 12 and up, boys and girls are welcome, with no experience necessary. Details and on-line registration can be found here.

Click here to see the local radio mention St. Andrew Rowing received on the STAR-94FM morning show, and find full results from the Youth National Championship here as well.

John Hunter Regatta

The Georgia Tech and Saint Andrew Rowing Clubs are delighted to be hosting the 24th Annual John Hunter Regatta at the Lake Lanier Olympic Rowing Center.

The Hunter is open to all college, scholastic, and youth rowing teams. Racing will be at the Lake Lanier, 1996 Olympic Games rowing venue. The 2000 meter course has a 6 lane buoyed course with starting platforms, enclosed finish tower and stadium seating for 3000 fans. Regatta information, Rules of Rowing, a preliminary schedule of events, forms and directions are all within this Website.

The John Hunter Regatta is awarding championship team point trophies to the college and youth teams scoring the most overall points. Scoring is based on USRowing scoring guidelines. We plan heats and finals for the varsity events with first, second and third place medals awarded for the finals. 2nd varsity, lightweight and novice events will permit two boats to enter with “A” boats racing “A’ boats; and “B” boats racing “B” boats. These races will be scheduled as one race flights and will award first, second and third place medals for events with four or more entries, first and second place medals with three entries, and first place medals for races with two entries. We will also hold several championship sponsored trophy events, awarding the winning team a race trophy plus their individual gold medals.

We would like to thank the Lake Lanier Rowing Club for their support and for providing a world class facility for Georgia Tech and Saint Andrew to host the John Hunter Regatta at Lake Lanier. On behalf of all three clubs I invite you to compete at this year’s Hunter. 2 Weekends, 2 Cities and 2 Thousand Meters of Anguish-laced Glory

Two thousand meters is the standard distance for an indoor rowing (“Erg”) competition and there's no faking it for those who rise to the challenge. Rowers cannot sneak, cheat, buy or otherwise finagle their way to a more desirable outcome on this monster of a physical and mental test, because the machine's monitor tells the story and the numbers do not lie. There are very hard edges to the results which provide a snapshot of an individual's ability, determination and preparation. Interestingly, it's the brutality of the test that results in commensurate bragging rights...almost as if the self-punishment is a badge of honor, or a war story to tell in a pain contest where the one who endures the most anguish is rewarded the greatest glory.

The past two weekends, St. Andrew Rowing Club participated in these “pain contests” in two different cities. First, on Saturday, February 6th a majority of the team's roster traveled to downtown Atlanta and defended home-town bragging rights at the 2010 Atlanta Erg Sprints (write-up by school newspaper) hosted by Georgia Tech Crew.

Racing against AJRA, Augusta Juniors and Westminster, St. Andrew Rowing Club had a fantastic day posting 11 of the top 20 times in the Junior Women and Junior Men's events, and 7 of the top 20 times in the Novice categories. Highlights included several rowers posting a personal record (“PR”) and two rowers beating the event records within their categories to win the coveted “Hammer Award”: Patrick Smith, Junior Coxswain Men 3:47.0 (1000m) and Stephen Podwojski, who won the Junior Men category with a time of 6:25.5.

Full results can be found here at the event site

The following weekend several of SARC's top varsity athletes also traveled to the C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints, World Indoor Rowing Championships in Boston, MA where the best of the best come from around the globe to test themselves at the highest level. On Sunday...Valentine's Day, the seven “gluttons for punishment” from St. Andrew raced well once again and represented the Southeast and SARC in strong fashion with several posting a new “PR”. Standouts of the day included Stephen Podwojski who rowed the 2,000m in 6:24.6 to finish in the top 10 of all 185 Junior Men and Hayley Tanasijevich finishing in 8:02.4 to place in the top 20 of all 80 Junior Lightweight Women.

Full results can be found here at the event site

We're proud of all our competitors regardless of their numbers because the beauty of the 2K test lies in the fact that anyone can do it and race not just other peers and contemporaries but also against oneself. The test is not simply to pull a number lower than the next person, but to pull your lowest number and to post your own “PR”. Just remember if you are up for the challenge, the monitor always tells the story, and the numbers do not lie!

Welcome to the Spring 2010 Season of St. Andrew Rowing Club

We have tried to compile a list of all parent and rower email addresses that wish to receive emails throughout the season - however, if someone in your family does not receive this email and you would like to add them to the list, please reply to communications[at]standrewrowing.com.

Web Site

Coach Dan and our webmaster, Mike Cleveland, have worked very hard to get our new web site (www.standrewrowing.com) up and running, putting in many hours of hard work and dedication to convert the old site to its new look and feel. Hats off to both of them! Coach Dan will be posting updates regularly on the front of the home page - which also has links to Twitter and Facebook - so please take the time to check it out regularly and take advantage of this valuable means of communication. Also, to new parents, Coach Dan updates the crew phone line with weather, practice and travel announcements - that number is (404) 339-0009. Practice cancellations will be posted no later than 3:30 p.m.

ERG Sprints

Our team officially kicks off the spring racing season this coming Saturday (Feb 6) by venturing to downtown Atlanta and the campus of Georgia Tech for the 2010 Atlanta Erg Sprints – a long-standing winter tradition and indoor rowing competition involving the “erg” (ergometer). There, some of the top collegiate and high school rowing clubs in the region will convene in team and individual battles for bragging rights over the 2,000m distance...a test that rowers love to hate.

We invite you to join us in cheering on the athletes this weekend, and even some of our coaches, who will be racing against the clock in several heats, vying for the fastest time in their category. Below is our schedule for the day by squads followed by directions. A full event schedule can be found at the Erg Sprint website as well. Looking forward to seeing some of you there!

CHANGES FOR SPRING 2010

Monday, January 25th will be the first day of Spring Season for our Varsity and Novice Crews.  We welcome everyone back into the swing of our full routine and racing season, and want you to be aware of a few updates to our schedule:

  1. Novice Men have shifted their "OFF" day to Tuesday to align with coaches' availability. We apologize for the confusion and have reposted the weekly practice schedule in the Program Descriptions .
  2. Remember important dates, deadlines and practice/racing schedules are now also updated in our team Google Calendar . You can subscribe to the team calendar if you'd like and have changes automatically sync to your own calendar, or simply refer back the team's calendar page to view changes.
  3. Finally, to clarify the start date for Introductory Scullers, this group will begin Spring Season on Tuesday, February 2nd. We posted two different dates and need to confirm that what you see on our calendar page and programs page are correct.

Thank you everyone for making Spring Registration a great one this year. 2010 racing looks to be full of great potential if we can just tame the river!

Out with the old; in with the new

2009
The end of the calendar year is always cause for reflection on what has been. While the fall 2009 rowing season was greeted with great anticipation by all in August, it ended with a great sigh of relief for most in November. Little did our coaching staff know when they were planning their respective squad’s training regimens during the summer months that Mother Nature would interrupt their best laid plans. Instead of leading our athletes on the water, they were forced, instead, to lead them into the water on both land and parking lot. The unusual fall season was not what any of us signed up for at registration.

In my years in and around our great sport, I have both witnessed and experienced some of the life lessons that rowing can teach us -- the rewards of hard work, the consequences of laziness, the thrill of victory, the disappointment of losing, working together as a team, and the need to go the extra mile when no one is watching. Usually, we expect these lessons to come to fruition at the end of a 2000 meter or 3-mile race but, as I witnessed this past season, a team and a club can come together and grow off the water, as well.

With Mother Nature providing us with a different kind of race course this past season, I have observed that adversity can bring out the best in people. Our three floods created havoc and the need to roll up our sleeves and pant legs. Stuff happened and you responded. On behalf of the Board of Directors, please accept our thanks for your speedy and generous responses of time, labor and capital in our multiple recovery efforts.

2010
The new year invites us to return to the norm. With the seeds of team building planted by spending more time on our boathouse recovery than post-leg drive recovery, it is now time to let coaches coach and our rowers row as the law of averages tells us that the spring season should provide us with more on-the-water time.

Our boathouse and equipment recovery efforts will continue into spring season but our goal is to accomplish our tasks without interrupting the team’s water time. As a result, we will, once again, be asking our parents to respond to our ongoing recovery needs when it does not interrupt your time on the shoreline at a regatta. I look forward to a great season of racing and meeting more of our SARC family at the boathouse and at the races.

Winter Season and Winter Challenge

Dear Rowers an Parents,

With Fall season behind us, you may know the hardest work done in preparation for sprint racing occurs in the winter months. So for coaches and parents, that will likely mean a work day or two to wrap up some of our post-flooding projects. A clean, reorganized boathouse and facility will help our training and confidence for months to come.

For rowers, the most important period of the year is Dec 1st - Mar 1st, because hard work done during this time will give you the endurance and the confidence to race at your best during sprint regattas starting in March.

With that in mind, St. Andrew Rowing offers two winter training options:

(1) Our "Winter Season" is training designed to provide structure and supervision during an off-season with coached workouts as a team. It's not mandatory, but strongly encouraged especially for varsity rowers. Details are below and on our website.

(2) For those unable to join the team to workout, we would like to continue our tradition of a "Winter Points Challenge" during the holiday season November 26th through January 3rd. This is a particularly difficult time to adhere to the rigors of training but most rewarding when accomplished.
Points are earned per the Point System provided (email your coach if you do not have) and you must email your point totals each week to Coach Kat (for women) and Coach Black (for men), for credit.
Note: Logging workouts may seem a simple task, but it is hard to remember what was done after several days go by; so try to keep an accurate accounting daily. It will be rewarding to look back over you accomplishments at the end of the challenge period.
Those who do not participate in Winter Season or the Winter Points Challenge should aim to cross-train or stay active in another sport so you do not lose all the hard work from fall training and racing.
