To Prospective Rowers

Saint Andrew Rowing Club welcomes all students interested in rowing. No experience is necessary! Ninety-nine percent of the men and women who turn out for crew have never rowed before.

Saint Andrew has four competitive seasons each year. The fall season generally starts the last week in August and runs through the second week of November. During the fall, we practice 5 days a week and compete at 4 head races. Head races are 2.5 to 3 miles long and the boats are started one at a time every 10-15 seconds.

The winter season runs from the third week of November to the end of January with a break during the Christmas and New Year holidays. During the winter the team only practices 4 times per week and half of our training is done on land. Winter season racing consists of an on the water race and an on the land race at the Atlanta Erg Sprints.

Starting the first week of February and finishing on the third weekend in May the spring season features 2000m sprint races. During the spring the team practices 5 days a week and competes at 4-5 races. 2000 meters is aproximately 1 ¼ miles and most races are run on six lane buoyed courses with the boats starting together.

If you are new to the sport of rowing, SARC offers one-week learn-to-row camps throughout the summer. The program provides all the necessary experiences to get you familiar with what the great sport of rowing is all about. The week includes: fundamentals of safety, rowing technique, ergometer use, boat handling, commands, and on-water coaching, including video review of you and your boatmates.

SARC also offers a summer season for rowers that have completed at least a spring or fall season of racing. The collective goal of the coaches involved in this season is that participants will use it as a tool to maintain physical fitness throughout the summer while working primarily in small boats (some sculling) to improve technique and balance muscular development. It is also a chance to benefit from more individualized coaching, discover more about the background of the sport rowing and learn about rowing opportunities at the collegiate level

Saint Andrews along with Georgia Tech rows out of The Monsignor E. Peter Ludden Rowing Center on the Chattahoochee River in Roswell.  Our workouts take place between 4:30 and 7pm on weekdays and 7 to 10am or 9 to 12pm on Saturday. The workouts consist of circuit training, running, erging and on-water rowing. During the first two weeks of each season, workouts focus on conditioning and learning the fundamentals. Emphasis is placed on two very important factors that serve as personal season-long goals: commitment and concentration.

Oarsmen and oarswomen often find their best friends in the sport and stay connected for the rest of their lives. Crew has the highest academic rating of any major sports group and crew alumni are almost invariably successful. There are also many scholarship opportunites for women who are interested in continuing to row in college.
