June 12, 2005 -- The Saint Andrew Rowing Club located in Roswell, GA made history by becoming the first team from the Southeast to medal in a crew event since the USRowing National Youth Invitational Championships began 11 years ago. Saint Andrew Rowing Club’s junior women’s 4+ claimed the title of the 3rd fastest boat in the nation in a close competition with Washington based Holy Names Academy who edged out Saint Andrew for 2nd place. Defending champion Brooks School from Massachusetts defended their title as the fastest junior women’s 4+ in the nation.

In May 2005, Saint Andrew Rowing Club competed in the Southeast Regional Championships and qualified three crews to compete at the National Youth Invitational Championships. In addition to the junior women’s 4+, the men’s squad made club history as well with its lightweight 4+ as the first SARC men’s boat to advance to Grand Finals in the history of the club’s performances at the Invitational Championships. The crew finished 6th in the nation and the women’s lightweight 4+ finished 14th.

For Saint Andrew Rowing this achievement marks the club’s greatest success in its 17 year history and is also a reflection of the growing popularity of rowing in the Southeast. Head Coach Dan McNair stated that his team has been building for this accomplishment for several years and is confident that the club and other Southeast rowing clubs will continue to develop into the same quality rowing community that has been established in the Northeast and Northwest for many generations.

Saint Andrew Rowing Club is a non-profit organization committed to using the sport of rowing to teach middle and high school members the values of commitment, hard work, dedication, sportsmanship, teamwork, and self development. The Club has more than 100 members from Atlanta-area schools. One week learn-to-row camps are available throughout the summer. Information about the club and rowing opportunities can be viewed at www.standrewrowing.com.

GT Erg Sprints & Farewell to Winter

Atlanta, GA (January 30, 2005) - Despite the weather, we had a fantastic turnout to erg sprints this year, aided by the newly formed junior novice event, which we represented quite well in the women's category. The event was postponed to Sunday afternoon and had a smaller turnout than previous years, but SA sent more athletes than we ever have before and fared very well once again.

    Oveall, 23 SA athletes competed:
    - 3 coxswains
    - 5 VW (3 were eligible for novice status and competed as novices)
    - 8 VM
    - 7 NW
    * We also had a few coxswains attend who did not race, but coached rowers through their pieces and cheered them on, along with a nice showing of parent supporters as well *

    Results:

VW SA took 1st and 2nd with times of 7:45 and 7:51, the only two varsity (junior) women to break 8:00 (Nancy Arrington-1st & Emily Lane-2nd)
VM SA's top time took 5th in a large field of close to 30 rowers with a time of 7:03 and 2-3 other men in the top 10. (Nick Passarello - 5th)
NW SA took 1st and 2nd or 1st and 3rd, with times of 7:54 and 7:59...two novice women breaking 8:00 as well! (Meg Bendik-1st and Christine Fiacco-2nd/3rd)
