ROSWELL, Oct. 13, 2007 – Rowers from Saint Andrew Rowing Club (SARC) and Atlanta Rowing Club (ARC) raised an estimated $26,000 in the fight against breast cancer at their Row for the Cure® Row-a-thon on the Chattahoochee River on Saturday, October 13th. More than 100 middle and high school rowers from SARC raised $15,000 and over 50 master rowers from ARC raised $11,000. Both clubs rowed boats on the Chattahoochee for a continuous twelve hours. Proceeds from the row-a-thon will benefit the Greater Atlanta Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
“We are delighted to be the beneficiary of such a wonderful event. Komen Atlanta is honored to partner with Saint Andrew Rowing and Atlanta Rowing Clubs in giving back to our community”, said Kelly Dolan, Executive Director of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Greater Atlanta Affiliate. Seventy five percent of the money donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure will stay in Atlanta community for education and treatment of breast cancer. The remaining 25 percent of monies raised support national breast cancer research projects.
“We have a fantastic group of rowers, coaches and parents in our club, so it’s not surprising that we exceeded our $10,000 goal”, said Jean Passarello from Saint Andrew Rowing Club and co-organizer of the row-a-thon. “We are thrilled that Atlanta Rowing Club joined us for this event, and we look forward to continued Row for the Cure® involvement at the Head of the Hooch regatta, November 3-4 in Chattanooga, TN”, said Passarello.
The first boat on the water was a group of charter members of Saint Andrew Rowing Club from the ’88-’89 season. Jim Cooper, Saint Andrew Rowing Club’s first coach, organized the reunion; and while most still reside in the Atlanta area, two traveled from New Jersey and Florida for the event. “Most of us hadn't touched an oar in 10-15 years”, said Chris Roach. “We want more excuses to get back together, so I wouldn't be surprised if we put a boat on the water each October for the Row for a Cure®.” said Roach.
The top fundraiser for Saint Andrew Rowing Club was Nicholas Karl who raised $2,329. Breast cancer has directly impacted many club families, including the Karl family. Nicholas’s mother, Karen, was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, and she is currently undergoing radiation treatment.
The initiative to host a Row for the Cure® fundraiser came from the Head of the Chattahoochee regatta. The “Hooch” is a Row for the Cure® Regatta, and all clubs attending were encouraged to host fundraisers to benefit their local Komen affiliates. The Hooch also has identified four races as Row for the Cure® races, and race trophy sponsorship monies will be donated to Komen Chattanooga.

Saint Andrew Rowing Club Crew Finishes Fourth at the 2007 USRowing Youth National Championship
June 10, 2007 – Cincinnati OH – Crews from Saint Andrew Rowing Club (SARC) competed in the USRowing Youth National Championships in Cincinnati with the Lightweight Men’s 8+ crew finishing fourth in the nation. This three-day regatta brings the very best youth rowers from across the United States to compete for national championships of youth rowing. Crews earn an invitation to this event with a top three finish in regional qualifying events.
Under the direction of head coach Nate Trythall, SARC qualified boats in four events representing the Southeast Region – a club record. Varsity Crews competed in the Lightweight Women’s 8+, Women’s 4+, Lightweight Men’s 4+, and Lightweight Men’s 8+.
The Lightweight Men’s 8+ posted one of the fastest SARC times ever (5:55:43) in their preliminary heat and won their semifinal race to qualify for Sunday’s Grand Final comprised of the six fastest boats. In the closest finish of the day, SARC earned fourth in the US, missing medals by less that one-hundredth of a second. This outstanding performance matches the best finish for any SARC men’s boat since 1997. “I couldn’t be more pleased and proud of the accomplishments our crew has achieved throughout the year, only to top it off with an extraordinary three days of racing”, said co-captain Ryan Terrette. “We raced like our lives depended on it, making it the greatest experience of our competitive careers”, said Terrette. The Men’s Lightweight 4+ finished 10th, the Women’s Open 4+ finished 15th, and the Women’s Lightweight 8+ finished 17th. “This season has truly been wonderful”, said Nate Trythall. “I am proud of the finishes of all boats this weekend. Qualifying to compete with the nation’s best is an honor in itself. The kids went out there and gave it their all and they came away knowing that that was more important than any medal or finish placement. That is what impresses me the most about these kids. It is such a great experience and it's something they will never forget.”
This championship, like the sport of rowing, continues to grow in size and popularity. Crews from one hundred forty rowing clubs from one hundred eight cities across the US competed on the 2000 meter course.
