Don't know anything about the sport of rowing? Never fear! Most of our families are brand new to rowing when they join SARC. Your athlete will be learning at each practice, but what about the parents? Parent involvement is crucial to the success of our club. We've assembled some resources here to give you some background and help you navigate through your early seasons with SARC.

    New Parent Orientation

Once your son or daughter has begun rowing, you will probably have many questions. Most of those will be centered around the rower’s first weeks’ experiences (expectations and responsibilities, aches and pains, conditioning routines, etc.) and the new language they bring home with them (catch, erg, rigging, seat, etc.) At the new parent orientation, you will have an opportunity to speak with coaches, board members (other parents!), ask questions, check out the equipment and the boathouse, and see the teams practice. We encourage new parents to attend.

The Fall 2007 parent orientation will Saturday, September 8, at 9-10am, SARC Boathouse..

    FAQs

Click here for Frequently Asked Questions about the sport of rowing.

    Season Kickoff Events

Each season, the club hosts a kickoff event where new families can learn about the club and meet coaches, board members and other parents. Please plan to attend the Spaghetti dinner in the fall and the Chili dinner in the spring. Club merchandise is for sale at these events. Look for details soon after the start of each season.

    Volunteering

You will no doubt be asked, asked, and asked again to volunteer to help the club in a number of ways. We know it can be intimidating to volunteer for something you have no experience with. Be assured that there are people and resources available to help you get involved with the club. We can only ask that you take the plunge, get involved!

Our parent volunteer coordinator is a key member of the Board of Directors, and you will learn more about opportunities via email and at club events.

    Contacts

Coaches will provide contact information to rowers at the beginning of the season. Along with contacting your squad coach, you can also contact the Team Director at crewcoach@standrewrowing.com.

The team is led by an elected Board of Directors, and each board member is available to answer your questions. Click here for more information about the board.

    Regattas

Details for each regatta are sent via email as soon as they are available. Click here for regatta information for the current season. Driving directions for each venue are also posted here (select "info" from the top menu).

Spectators should bring chairs, field glasses (if you own a pair), book or news paper to pass the idol time, and a small cooler with drinks and snacks. Food is usually sold at the venue. Dress for a day outdoors, and bring the appropriate gear for all weather conditions.

Our rowers develop long-lasting friendships on the team, and the same is true for our parents! Look for the Saint Andrew tent at each regatta. We encourage all parents to get a name tag at the tent, introduce yourself to other SARC parents, and mingle! You'll find that other parents are one of the best resources for getting acclimated to the club and to the sport of rowing.

    SARC Merchandise

An easy way to spot other Saint Andrew parents is by their SARC spirit wear! Merchandise is typically available at registration and at the kick-off events each season.
