What are "Traditions of Excellence"?

Our focus is on providing positive role models for young athletes and coaching the person first...the athlete second.

Since we do not have "cuts", all who are willing to show up and work hard earn the opportunity to compete on race day.

By focusing on excellence rather than the objective of winning, an indirect effect shows up where a subset of athletes raise the bar for themselves and work very hard in and out of practice to be highly competitive. If that's you, we invite you to join one of our programs and help us continue to add to a rewarding track record of success on the water:

  • 10 years in a row qualifying one or more boats to Youth National Championships (including one medal and several top 10 finishes over the years)
  • 8 years in a row receiving an invitation to compete at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, MA (including one medal in 2004).
  • 10 years racing at Southeast Regional Championships with several overall team points trophies, and in a majority of years finishing 1st in the state.
  • Over the past 5 years the number of SARC athletes recruited or given scholarships to row in college has doubled.
  • SARC is one of only two GA teams to host its own regatta, in addition to chairing two community services projects each year.
  • We have grown to offer sculling in addition to sweep rowing, both at an introductory and competitive level.

NOVICE & VARSITY CREW

(9th-12th grade)

This program is for you if you are interested in rigorous training and competing coupled with the fun and camaraderie of the ultimate team sport. Although some younger athletes are accepted in exceptional cases, this program is geared toward 9th-12th grade boys and girls. No rowing background is required, however athletic experience in other sports is a positive.

SARC has two groups within this program: a Novice squad for beginners or athletes with less than 1 year of rowing experience and Varsity rowers must have completed two seasons on Novice. Although some rowers begin as late as junior or senior year, most novice rowers are freshmen and sophomores and upperclassmen are encouraged to move more quickly into the Varsity squad.

Novice & Varsity Crew Practice Schedule (Spring 2010):
Novice Women (M-Th 4:30-7:00p, Sat 8-11a)
Novice Men (M, W, Th 4:30-7:00p, Fri 4:30-6:30p, Sat 8-11a)
Varsity Men & Women (M-Th 4:30-7:00p, Fri 4:30-6:30p, Sat 8-11a)
* 1st Day of Practice - Monday January 25th

If attending a minimum of 85-90% of scheduled workouts would be a significant challenge, please discuss your schedule with a coach to determine which program is the best starting point for you.

INTRODUCTORY SCULLING

(7th grade & up)

Learn the basics of sculling in team boats, while working on conditioning and core strength training. Generally there are three types of scullers in this program: 1) Middle school athletes who love the sport and anxiously await joining crew once they are older, 2) High school athletes who love the sport and cannot quite meet the attendance requirement for crew just yet, or 3) Anyone curious about the sport looking for a laid back way to test it out before committing to a full season.

Introductory Sculling Practice Schedule (Spring 2010):
Men & Women (T-Th 5:00-7:00p, Sat (optional) 12-2p)
* 1st Day of Practice - Monday February 2nd
* Introductory scullers do not travel or race with Novice and Varsity crews

By improving general fitness and flexibility, introductory sculling is a great foundation for those interested in competitive crew in the future, and likewise can be a fantastic recreational alternative for several years.
