Learn About Rowing

What is Rowing All About Anyway?

Why is rowing such a distinguished sport?  Because not just anyone can rise to the level of performance required to be a competitive rower!  The video below was created by a SARC alum who is now rowing for the men's team at Princeton.

Sweep Rowing

This program is for you if you are interested in rigorous training and competing, coupled with the fun and camaradarie of the ultimate team sport!  Although some younger athletes are accepted, this program is geared toward 9th-12th grade boys and girls.  No rowing background is required; however, prior athletic experience is a positive.

We have two groups:

  • A Novice squad for beginners or athletes with less than one year of rowing experience.
  • A Varsity squad for those athletes completing two seasons of competitive rowing.

Both squads also participate in sculling as training schedules permit.

Introduction to Sculling

This program is for those who wish to learn the basics of sculling in team boats while working on conditioning and core strength training.  Typically three types of athletes participate in this program:

  • Middle school athletes who love the sport and anxiously await joining crew once they are older
  • High school athletes who love the sport but cannot quite meet the attendance requirement for crew
  • Anyone looking for a more laid back approach to learning the sport.

By improving general fitness and flexibility, introductory sculling is a great foundation for those interested in competitive crew in the future.

Learn to Row Summer Camp

Learn To Row Summer Camp is offered for rowers from the 6th thru the 12th grades to those wishing to learn the sport of rowing.  Camps are one week long, with either a morning or evening session.  You may wish to participate in multiple weeks to maximize your experience or participate in weeks 4 or 5 which is a more advanced curriculum.  While the beginner lessons are still offered for newbies, advanced rowers can hone their skills and athleticism.

We highly recommend that your athlete sign up for at least two sessions to see what crew is all about.  Please click on the Summer Programs tab for more specific information for the summer season.
